A Pyromusical Experience + Dinner at SM Mall of Asia

When you're looking for a magical and enchanting evening after shopping at SM Mall of Asia, you have a perfect choice. The Philippine International Pyromusical Competition (PIPC) has been held there since 2010, except in 2019 (moved to SM City Clark in Pampanga) and from 2020 to 2023 (due to COVID-19 pandemic). It has been my favorite annual fireworks show ever since I first watched it in 2016.

For the first time since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, and after missing out the 2019 edition in Pampanga due to its distant location from Metro Manila, I watched it this 2025, my first since 2018.

Editor's note: This was updated on March 16, 2025, to reflect the results of the competition.

Overview of the competition

The PIPC was initially launched in December 2005 as the World Pyro Olympics. It was held at an esplanade boardwalk behind the then-unfinished SM Mall of Asia. After the competition's last run in 2008, it was relaunched to its current name in February 2010. Two countries fire in a five- or six-week period every Saturday; the opening night begins with an exhibition number by the Philippines followed by its first competitor, the Philippines closes the competition on the final night with another exhibition after the winners have been announced.

The PIPC is organized by SM Supermalls, in coordination with Platinum Fireworks, Inc.

Who are this year's competitors?

The Philippines, as the host country, does not participate in the PIPC, but does perform an exhibition performance on the opening and closing nights. There were eight competitors from eight countries that participated:

  • Steyrfire - Austria
  • LuxFactory Fireworks - France
  • Polaris Fireworks - China
  • Rozzi Fireworks - USA
  • Steffes-Olig Feurwerke - Germany
  • Faseecom - South Korea
  • Pyrotex Fireworx - United Kingdom
  • Royal Pyrotechnie - Canada

Tickets can be found here. Please take note that I am neither promoting nor endorsing the show, and that we paid the tickets for this visit.

Full experience: February 22, 2025

The entire family tagged along with me to watch this spectacular event unfold. This was done on the second of five evenings of the competition, which ran from February 15 to March 15.

Since the venue at SM Mall of Asia is right at the seashore, there are many restaurants that are located at the so-called SM by the BAY.

Dinner first!

We reserved a slot at Giligan's, which we preferred over other choices due to its wide array of fine dining options. The meal is bundled with pre-paid tickets, which were priced at 1,000 pesos each.

A dinner to kick off the evening!

We ordered a variety of meals for our dinner, including sisig, vegetable soups, chicken meals, and more, with a halo-halo and leche flan dessert to wrap up our meal.

Competition proper

The competition started at 19:30 with the singing of the Philippine National Anthem and the opening remarks of the hosts. The presentation of the judges then followed after the competition criteria was introduced.

Diners and guests get ready for the fireworks displays!

Each competitor performs a fireworks display of up to 15-20 minutes. These are blasted off a piece of reclaimed land located 300 meters from the seawall of SM Mall of Asia. Before each competitor's introduction, the national anthems of each origin countries are played before the performances.

LuxFactory Fireworks of France shows off a spectacular debut!

The main show itself started at 19:43 when LuxFactory Fireworks from France started blowing off their fireworks. I saw in subsequent social media posts that this firm is a "debutante" at the PIPC. France was previously represented by Brezac Artifices in 2019 and three other firms since the competition's inception in 2010.

Take a look at some pictures of LuxFactory:

After that, the competition takes a break and guest performers then took to the central stage (which we were far away from our restaurant). Guest performers invited by SM differ per evening; violinist Michaella Torres performed that evening.

Will Polaris Fireworks of China regain its title?

Polaris Fireworks, Co., Ltd. of Hunan, China was the second competitor of that night. While China has been at both the World Pyro Olympics from 2007 and the PIPC since 2010, Polaris first competed at the PIPC in 2015. From 2016 to 2018, it finished at the podium as the runners-up, and clinching the championship in 2019.

Their display featured a grandeur of several shapes of artistic fireworks, showing how they were competitive enough to wow us. Little did I know that they would eventually win the competition.

Take a look at some pictures of Polaris Fireworks:

The competition soon ended a little before 21:00.

My take on PIPC

Spectacular. Fun. Exciting. I have no words to say anymore, but this will truly mesmerize your evening!

Jeju Air: Affordable, but worth the price?

Back in September 2024, my mom, who, by the way, filmed this flight due to my school classes, booked a short weekend trip to Seoul, the capital of South Korea, a popular tourist hotspot in East Asia. Although I have featured Cebu Pacific and AirAsia more frequently in my blogs, this is the first time that I featured a low-cost carrier that some of you never heard of: Jeju Air . Jeju Air is South Korea’s first and largest low-cost airline. Operating an exclusive fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft, it flies to forty-one destinations around the Asia-Pacific region from its hubs at Gimpo International Airport and Incheon International Airport in Seoul, as well as Busan and Daegu. In the Philippines, it flies to Clark in Pampanga, as well as Manila, Cebu, and Bohol. Notes: This is a personal blog on our travel experience and is neither promoted nor endorsed by Jeju Air. The author of this blog did not board this flight. Rather, my mom represented me due to my school classes.

Flying Cebu Pacific's Big Juan to Japan

On June 30, 2023, I flew on Cebu Pacific's Airbus A330 for the first time. Although my past low-cost flights are in narrow-body aircraft (like the A320/A321 to be exact, because I also flew with CEB in the past and  AirAsia more recently ), this is the first time I flew no-frills on a wide-body—the A330. Note: This is a personal blog on our travel experience and is neither promoted nor endorsed by Cebu Pacific.

A morning flight to Tokyo-Narita on Philippine Airlines

For the third time, I traveled to Japan, but for the second consecutive time, I flew with our flag carrier, Philippine Airlines . It has been almost a year since I last flew with them to Nagoya in July 2024. Have they improved their service? Let's find out in this flight to Narita. Philippine Airlines  is the flag carrier of the Philippines and also Asia's first and oldest airline (its long history dates back to 1941 and continues to shrine through until today!). Hosanna Filio David: Palm Sunday at the Manila Cathedral

At the beginning of Holy Week is  Palm Sunday , in which the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem is commemorated. Holy Week is one of the most important and significant events of the Church, along with Easter, which is being commemorated at the end of this sacred and solemn week. During this day, churchgoers buy palm fronds from vendors, which are blessed by priests at various parishes. The Philippines is home to a large population professing the Catholic faith. Holy Week forms part of our centuries-long devotion to the Catholic Church, with many traditions near and far. Around 78 percent of the 100-million populace are Catholics. This 2025, I visited the Manila Cathedral  in Intramuros to attend the first of four Masses that would be celebrated at the "Mother Church of the Philippines". Panunulúyan: A harmonious play of Christmas

The Philippines is known for having the best (and longest) Christmas celebrations in the world. Our cherished traditions include Simbang Gabi and caroling of youth groups at neighborhoods. But did you know that we also have a unique Christmas tradition in this Southeast Asian archipelago? This is  Panunulúyan , or  Panulúyan  in short,  which is a dramatization of the events leading up to the first Christmas in Bethlehem, as well as the nativity scene itself. A lineup of the characters that led the  Panunulúyan  on the evening of Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024. Taken with permission. For this year, I traveled a hundred kilometers south of the capital Metro Manila to  Ibaan , a small town in the province of  Batangas , for our annual holiday visit with our family and some of my friends in the province.  The Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of St. James the Greater , a Spanish colonial-era church founded in 1832, is the main focus of this blog...

Good Friday in Ibaan, Batangas: Senakulo and Processions

Perhaps Good Friday  is the most solemn and somber day of the year for Christians. On this day, we commemorate the Crucifixion and Death of Jesus Christ . In the Philippines, we have our own tradition of  Senákulo , dramatizing the events of the Passion using traditional scripts. Siete Palabras  is a three-hour service reflecting on the Seven Last Words of Jesus. Finally, the Liturgy of the Lord's Passion  starts at 3:00 p.m. In the evening some parishes conduct a procession, which culminates in the Rite of Burial. The Burial Procession on the evening of Good Friday For this year, I traveled a hundred kilometers south of the capital Metro Manila to  Ibaan , a small town in the province of  Batangas , for our annual Holy Week.  The  Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of St. James the Greater , a Spanish colonial-era church founded in 1832, is the main focus of this blog. New Year's trip on Cebu Pacific to Singapore

The five days from December 28, 2024, to January 1, 2025, constitutes the longest possible "weekend" in a calendar year. Since my favorite season to travel is Christmas (and by extension, New Year), we took this opportunity to book a round-trip ticket via Cebu Pacific for my first year-end vacation outside the Philippines. An Airbus A321neo of Cebu Pacific parked at its gate at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 shortly before dawn on Saturday, December 28, 2024. My mom joined me in this vacation to Singapore . Notes: This is a personal blog on our travel experience and is neither promoted nor endorsed by Cebu Pacific. This blog is the first of five parts of our  2024 Singapore Year-End Trip , spanning from Days 1 to 4. See these links for Day 1 , Day 2 , Day 3 , and Day 4 . Exchange rates between currencies are: 1 Philippine peso = 0.017 USD and 0.023 SGD.
